The very origin and evolution of tarot cards has not been explained till date, but then there are many theories, which give more or less an insight about this whole matter. It is believed that they originally were started in Italy during the early fifteenth century, more like a famous playing card. It comprised of 78 cards and with one extra card for the four suits. This extra card was known as the “fool” or the wild card. But don't confuse it with the joker of the prevalent playing cards, because both of them are two entirely different entities. Slowly and slowly, perhaps by the end of the eighteenth century, some intellectuals had the queer intuition that though these cards are used for frolic, they also have in-depth meaning, a mystifying touch. The very reason of the emergence of their belief isn't explained till date. It was thought that these tarots had more of power disguised in them. The images revealed a different story, altogether. These images were, thereby linked with confounding mysteries of Kabala, Egypt, alchemy, etc. This is how the tarots came to be used for divination purposes. It involves the reciprocation of the seeker and the reader, the two entities important in the reading process. The reader is the one who looks into the cards, with his intellect and deep thinking; he gives the answers to the queries raised by the speaker and predicts as well as interprets the assumption. Moreover, each spread has a different meaning. So the reader has to scrutinise the meaning of the illustration drawn on the card and the arrangement of spade. These two combined helps in making the interpretation. Since the whole process is not so very scientifically explained, the people always question its worth, as to how much the predictions explain the unknown. It has also be linked with black magic, but as the whole subject means, the tarot cards have the power to relate with the unconscious and subconscious mind of the seeker. This aspect that takes into account the power of the subconscious mind is very much a matter of frantic interest and scientific experiments. There has been a lot of research by theorists like Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud on this regard that has made the foundations of tarot reading stronger and thought provoking, rather than to be tentative and dubious. They have tried to explore the various strengths of the subconscious mind, which often explained in terms of psychology and meditation. So, hence, these aspects are also connected with tarot card reading!
